President Donald Trump has issued an executive order directing urgent action to ensure that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) employees can receive their paychecks amidst a government shutdown that has stretched beyond 40 days due to a stalemate over the Department of Homeland Security's budget.

The order instructs the Secretary of Homeland Security and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to utilize available legal authority to address the unpaid wages of TSA personnel who have been working without pay during the budgetary impasse.

Reuters reported, citing Department of Homeland Security officials, that concerns are mounting over workforce retention and the stability of airport security screening operations as tens of thousands of TSA employees face missed paychecks due to funding shortfalls.

According to data cited by Reuters from the Department of Homeland Security, disruptions at airports have intensified in recent weeks, with an increase in TSA employee absences and a rise in resignations among staff struggling with unpaid leave.

Aviation authorities and industry groups have warned in official statements that the staffing shortage is contributing to longer wait times at security checkpoints, delays at screening stations, and operational disruptions at major airports nationwide.

Despite President Trump's executive order, there are differing views on the feasibility of actually disbursing payments, as federal agencies are generally prohibited from spending funds without congressional budget approval.

Notwithstanding the uncertainty, Reuters reported, citing a Department of Homeland Security announcement, that TSA employees are expected to begin receiving their paychecks as early as Monday, in accordance with the administration's plans.

The White House has described these payment efforts as a temporary measure while negotiations are ongoing.
