The Department of Defense is also considering a plan to deploy an additional 10,000 combat troops to the Middle East. This comes amid news that a large-scale "final blow" will be delivered if the Trump administration's diplomatic efforts fail and the Strait of Hormuz remains blockaded.
Citing sources, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday (26th) that the Department of Defense is considering sending up to 10,000 additional ground combat troops to the Middle East, including infantry and armored units.
This would be in addition to the Marine Expeditionary Force and the 82nd Airborne Division already deployed in the region.
Iran is responding by preparing 1 million ground troops. The enlistment age has even been lowered to 12.
In an analysis posted on Facebook on Friday (27th), Gene Cummings, former publisher of The Asia Post, pointed out, "The 'Karbala narrative,' the core of Iran's revolutionary ideology, embodies their religious belief that choosing death in the face of an overwhelming enemy is rather a glory and a victory. This conviction strengthens the regime's will to resist and makes compromise very difficult."
While Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses has stated, "We negotiate with bombs," President Trump's negotiation style is to achieve desired outcomes through maximum pressure.
Columnist Cummings also noted, "It is a significant variable that President Trump has stated he is currently engaging with forces other than the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as his negotiation partners (good forces)." She further analyzed, "Even if negotiations with 'other forces' make some progress, there is a high possibility that the IRGC and armed groups will not recognize the agreement or will resist it internally."
She added, "Ultimately, because the structure makes it difficult for the negotiation outcome to be genuinely binding on Iran's entire military strength, I believe that although President Trump is pursuing negotiations to the fullest extent, this is by no means an easy negotiation."
President Trump has verified whether his negotiation partners hold substantial influence within Iran. This "gift" was the measure that allowed 10 oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, which gave Trump confidence in his negotiation partners.
Ultimately, President Trump's actions demonstrate that he is conducting negotiations predicated on the scenario of his negotiation partners gaining control of the Iranian regime.
It remains to be seen what role the U.S. military currently deployed in the Middle East will play in the process of the Iranian representatives with whom the Trump administration is negotiating gaining substantial power within Iran.
