The United States announced on Monday (30th) that it will reopen its embassy in Caracas, Venezuela, which had been closed.

This move comes after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was ousted earlier this year.

US special forces extracted Maduro in early January, transported him to New York, and put him on trial for drug trafficking charges. Subsequently, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez took control of the government and has been working to improve relations with Washington.

Politico reported that the U.S. State Department stated that this measure "will enhance our ability to communicate directly with Venezuela's interim government, civil society, and the private sector."

Since Maduro's ouster, the United States has been cooperating with Caracas to rebuild Venezuela's oil industry and stabilize its economy.

During a cabinet meeting on Thursday (26th), President Trump jokingly remarked that Maduro's removal had made him popular in Venezuela, and then drew laughter by suggesting he might run for president of Venezuela after his term at the White House ends, competing against current President Delcy Rodríguez.
