U.S. President Trump [UPI Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday (local time) expressed his displeasure with South Korea, which has yet to respond to a request for troop deployment, stating that European and Asian countries should manage the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran effectively blockades.
During an Easter luncheon at the White House on Monday, Trump said, "Let the European countries do it. Let South Korea do it," implying that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is not America's problem.
Trump added, "(South Korea) has not been helpful to us," stating, "Even though we have 45,000 troops in a difficult area, right next to nuclear weapons (North Korea)."
This appears to be an assertion that South Korea has not cooperated with requests for the dispatch of warships to the Strait of Hormuz, despite the U.S. maintaining a presence of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) for defense against North Korea. USFK numbers around 28,500, but President Trump cited an inflated figure again.
Trump continued, "Let Japan do it. They bring in 90% of their oil from the strait. Let China do it. Let them do it," he added.
