Pam Bondi is stepping down as Attorney General on the 2nd (local time) and moving to the private sector.
President Trump announced that Todd Blanche, Deputy Attorney General, will be appointed as Bondi's successor, at least temporarily.
President Trump praised Bondi on Truth Social, stating, "Pam Bondi is a great American patriot and a loyal friend, and she has served faithfully as my Attorney General for the past year."
He continued, "Pam successfully led a nationwide crackdown on crime, resulting in the lowest murder rate since 1900. We cherish Pam greatly, and she will be moving to an important and necessary new role in the private sector, which will be announced soon."
He added, "Todd Blanche, the Deputy Attorney General and a very capable and respected legal expert, will serve as Acting Attorney General."
Blanche is known to have built strong trust with President Trump by defending him in several criminal cases, including the "hush money" allegations. He is considered a key confidant within the Justice Department who will reflect the President's intentions and push for the so-called "normalization (overhaul)" of the department.
He has also been nominated to serve as Acting Librarian of Congress concurrently with his role as Deputy Attorney General. This position is a unique public office that, while part of the legislative branch, is under the President's appointment power. It oversees the Congressional Research Service (CRS), which provides policy research and analytical materials to members of Congress.
Blanche shared President Trump's post on X today, writing, "Pam Bondi led this department with strength and conviction, and I am grateful for her leadership and friendship. Thank you, President Trump, for your trust and for the opportunity to serve as Acting Attorney General. We will continue to support our police, enforce the law, and keep America safe."
Speculation about Bondi's dismissal has been ongoing for months, primarily due to her perceived mishandling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, failure to indict Trump's political opponents, and unsuccessful federal prosecutor appointments.
Some rumors suggested that Bondi had fallen out of favor with White House Chief of Staff Suzi Wilz. Others suggested that Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin was being considered as Bondi's successor.
This is the second cabinet change in the second Trump administration. Last month, President Trump replaced Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen with Senator Mark Wayne Mullin, following controversy over the deaths of two Minnesotans during immigration enforcement operations.
