U.S. President Donald Trump [UPI Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 8th (local time) that Israel's attack on Lebanon, which has emerged as a fuse that could break the ceasefire with Iran, was "not included in the ceasefire agreement."
President Trump revealed this in a phone interview with U.S. public broadcaster PBS on the same day, according to the reporter who conducted the interview, who shared it on their X (formerly Twitter) account.
When asked why Israel's attack on Lebanon was not included in the agreement, President Trump replied, "Because of Hezbollah," adding, "That will be dealt with. It's fine."
When asked if it was okay for Israel to continue attacking Lebanon, he responded, "That's part of the negotiation. Everybody knows that," and described it as "a separate little skirmish."
President Trump's remarks align with Israel's position. The Israeli military had announced that while it would halt attacks on Iran in accordance with the two-week ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran, it would continue to use force against Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed group in Lebanon.
However, Iran claims that Israel's continued attacks on Lebanon violate the ceasefire agreement and has stated it will withdraw the agreement, including the resumption of passage through the Strait of Hormuz, Tasnim News reported, citing relevant sources.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also officially raised the issue of Israel's attack on Lebanon as a ceasefire violation with Pakistan, which mediated the ceasefire, placing the temporary ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran in an unstable state from its first day.
Meanwhile, President Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, regarding negotiations with Iran during the ceasefire period: "There are numerous agreements, lists and letters coming out from people who are not involved in the negotiations whatsoever and they are, for the most part, total con artists, quacks and the like. They will be quickly exposed once the Federal investigation is completed."
He added, "There is only one meaningful point that the United States can accept, and it will be discussed privately during this negotiation period. These points are the basis upon which we have agreed to a ceasefire. They are reasonable and can be easily implemented."
President Trump also stated, "This is very similar to what ‘Fake News CNN’ did last night with a ‘source’ with no authority whatsoever putting out a letter to the headline with a mighty standing."
