White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt [Reuters=Yonhap News]
The White House announced on the 15th (local time) that discussions for a ceasefire with Iran are progressing productively and that no request has been made for a ceasefire extension.
White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated at a White House briefing on the same day, "There have been a few false reports this morning that we have officially requested an extension of the ceasefire, which is not true at this time," adding, "We remain very committed to negotiations and discussions."
She further commented, "These discussions are productive and are continuing at this moment."
The United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire on the 7th, which is set to expire on the 21st.
Previous reports indicated that both sides were considering extending the ceasefire by an additional two weeks to secure more time for ceasefire negotiations.
Leavitt also said, "I have also seen reports about the possibility of face-to-face meetings. While such discussions are underway, nothing is finalized until an official announcement is made."
She emphasized, "However, we view the prospects for an agreement positively," and added, "It would clearly be in Iran's best interest to accept President Trump's demands."
Regarding the location of the next face-to-face meeting, Leavitt stated, "It is highly likely that it will be the same location as last time (Islamabad, Pakistan)."
The United States and Iran, who agreed to a 'two-week ceasefire' on the 7th, held their first round of negotiations in Islamabad for over 20 hours on the 11th but failed to reach an agreement.
