In April, then-Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung and lawmakers Chung Chin-rai and Kim Min-seok. Yonhap News

"We will uphold the President's will with the hearts of Lee and Chung."

"With the united hearts of Lee, Chung, and Kim, we will push reforms like a storm."

These statements, spoken side-by-side by Chung Chin-rai, leader of the Democratic Party, and Kim Min-seok, Prime Minister, demonstrate a shift in the political zeitgeist. Those who once declared, "The party is not a subcontractor of the Blue House," are now voluntarily acting as one with the administration. The framework of democracy, with its separation of powers and checks and balances, has vanished, and the center of power is attempting to become a single organism bound by language of loyalty.

Chung Chin-rai's case is symbolized by a well-known incident. He was caught smoking a cigarette in a back alley during the Sewol Ferry protest and hunger strike in Gwanghwamun. It was a prime example of "insincere political performance." At the time, he declared, "I will share the suffering with the people," but the staged suffering took precedence over reality. Now, he is pressuring the legislature by calling for the "eradication of seditious elements" and "decisions on the level of lifting martial law."

However, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok is a figure who warrants more attention. During President Roh Moo-hyun's administration, he was at the forefront of reforms. However, his subsequent departure from the Uri Party, return to the Democratic Party, role as policy committee chairman during Chairman Lee Nak-yon's leadership, increased influence under the Song Young-gil administration, and finally his appointment as Prime Minister under the Lee Jae-myung administration, make him a living history of factional shifts.

In 2018, he attempted to run for Seoul mayor but was sidelined by Park Won-soon. In the early days of the Moon Jae-in administration, he was excluded from the core pro-Moon faction and remained a quiet observer. However, with the support of Chairman Lee Nak-yon's "stable strategy" in the 2020 general election, he made a comeback in Yeongdeungpo B and was appointed as the party's policy committee chairman, re-entering the mainstream. Under Chairman Song Young-gil, he strengthened his position through an alliance with the senior lawmakers' group. Subsequently, even in the Lee Jae-myung administration, where non-pro-Lee factions were marginalized, he again deployed the "loyalty card" to secure the Prime Minister's post.

He recently praised the President-centered governance, stating, "Representative Chung and I are not of the same mind as Lee and Chung, but rather share the united hearts of Lee, Chung, and Kim." While on the surface this is a statement wishing for the administration's success, it conceals an extraordinary sense of timing for political survival and precarious balancing. In the past, he quietly stepped aside, but now he claims to be at the vanguard of reform. That is the true face of the politician Kim Min-seok.

Ultimately, the phrase "united hearts of Lee, Chung, and Kim" is closer to a blueprint for political survival than a national vision. Chung Chin-rai's hunger strike performance and Kim Min-seok's factional pilgrimage all point to one thing: how close can they get to the center of power? It is not politics directed at the people, but loyalty directed at power. It is not the zeitgeist, but opportunistic language.

We must ask:

Is 'reform' truly for the people?

Is 'united hearts' truly for national governance?

Or is it merely wordplay by those seeking to erase their past and survive?
