U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will be able to sell a lot of American cars in the future thanks to South Korea opening its market through trade negotiations.

In an interview with CNBC on the 5th (local time), President Trump boasted about the results of the trade agreement, saying, "South Korea has opened up its country, and it's not just opened up the market, it's going to be a tremendous business."

He added, "Korea was a closed country, and now all of a sudden we can sell cars, trucks, SUVs (sports utility vehicles) to Korea. We are really opening up Korea." South Korea imported American cars even before the trade agreement with the United States, but the U.S. has emphasized South Korea's automotive safety and environmental standards as non-tariff barriers.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, South Korea promised through the agreement to accept American cars that meet U.S. safety standards as also meeting South Korean safety standards.

President Trump reiterated that the investments promised by other countries to lower tariffs are money given to the U.S., not loans that the U.S. has to repay.

When the host asked what would happen if they didn't make the promised investments, using the European Union (EU) as an example, he replied, "Then they will have to pay 35% tariffs."

"It's a gift. It's not a loan," he said. "There's nothing to repay. They've given us $600 billion to invest in anything we want," he explained.

When pointed out that there were no detailed specifics in the trade agreement, he emphasized, "Investing $600 billion in anything I want is the detailed specific."
