Suspect in White House Correspondents' Dinner Shooting [President Trump's Truth Social. AFP Yonhap News]

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on April 26 (local time) that the suspect in the shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Dinner may have targeted U.S. President Donald Trump.

In an interview with U.S. broadcaster NBC on the same day, Blanche said the shooter "was actually targeting people who work in the administration, potentially including the president."

The suspect, Cole Thomas Allen, 31, a resident of California, was apprehended on the spot after firing a shotgun at a Secret Service agent in the security screening area of the White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C. the previous night and attempting to breach security.

Although the shooter did not enter the dinner hall, President Trump and other attendees present at the event were evacuated.

Blanche revealed that investigations confirmed the suspect traveled from California to Washington D.C. via train, making a stop in Chicago, and checked into the hotel one or two days before the event.

He added that the two firearms the shooter possessed at the time of the crime "were purchased within the last two years."

Furthermore, Blanche stated that while the suspect is currently believed to have acted alone, this assessment could change as investigators gather more information.

The shooter is not cooperating with investigators, but Blanche announced that the suspect is scheduled to be indicted in federal court on April 27 on charges including assaulting a federal officer, discharging a firearm, and attempted murder of a federal officer.

Meanwhile, Blanche expressed confidence in the safety of British King Charles III during his upcoming four-day visit to the United States starting April 27, at the invitation of President Trump.
