President Donald Trump has renewed his call for the passage of the "Save America Act." This bill mandates proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and requires photo identification for voting.

Furthermore, the bill proposes to ban general mail-in voting, with exceptions for absentee ballots.

However, Democrats oppose the legislation, arguing that another law is unnecessary as it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote. They also contend that the bill would make it difficult for voters who struggle with document renewal, such as women who change their last name after marriage, the elderly, low-income individuals, and Native Americans, to cast their ballots.

On Monday evening, the 27th, President Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, "Our elections are rigged, stolen, and a laughingstock all over the world. If we don't solve this problem, our country will no longer exist."

He urged "all Republicans" to fight for the "Save America Act."

This renewed appeal comes at a time when the bill's legislative prospects have significantly diminished following a recent setback in the Senate.

The Senate attempted to include the bill in a "Reconciliation" bill, which can pass with a simple majority by bypassing the filibuster requiring over 60 votes. However, the measure was rejected in a vote on Thursday, the 23rd, with a tally of 48 to 50.

Although Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, a lack of party unity was evident as four Republican senators—Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Tom Tillis—voted with the Democrats against the bill.

President Trump has adopted a "legislative blockade" tactic, threatening to veto any other legislation until this bill is passed, calling the failure to pass it a "political suicide (Unrecoverable Death Wish)."

With the failure of the reconciliation process in the Senate, Republican leadership, including Senate Minority Leader John Thune, has put the bill on hold to focus on other urgent legislative matters.

The Senate is currently prioritizing issues such as the looming crisis with Iran, passing a budget to avert a government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and economic concerns, pushing the Save America Act down the agenda.

Political observers predict that with the difficulty of passing the bill, Republicans are likely to use it as a political tool to pressure Democrats, making it a key issue for the 2026 midterm elections rather than pursuing actual legislation.

Nevertheless, President Trump's reiterated call for passage by Republican lawmakers suggests an intention to emphasize its role as a midterm election issue.
