U.S. President Donald Trump said on April 29 (local time) that he was offered Russian assistance in resolving the Iran dispute and uranium enrichment during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but he declined, prioritizing an end to the war in Ukraine.
The President expressed confidence that the Russia-Ukraine war could be resolved "relatively quickly," or that a ceasefire could be reached while Russia holds its Victory Day celebrations on May 9.
Speaking to reporters after the phone call, while hosting the four Artemis II astronauts at the White House, Trump said, "He would like to see a resolution," and "He certainly would. And that’s a good thing. I suggested a little bit of a ceasefire, and he may do that. He may do something in relation to that."
According to Politico, Putin is expected to scale back Russia's annual Victory Day parade, including canceling a tank procession on Moscow's Red Square.
Trump stated that while Russia is willing to help resolve the Iran dispute, he opted to refuse their assistance, believing it was more important for Russia to focus on ending its four-year war with Ukraine.
"He said that he would get involved if we achieve the enrichment of nuclear weapons," Trump told reporters. "I said, 'I want you to get involved in ending the war with Ukraine. That’s much more important to me.'"
The President also indicated that the dispute with Iran could conclude "around the same time" as the war with Russia, but stated that peace negotiations are ongoing and the U.S. is strongly demanding that Iran abandon its nuclear weapons ambitions.
Regarding Iran, Trump said, "They've made a lot of progress," and "The question is whether they're going to make enough progress." He added, "So, no deal will be made at this time unless they agree not to have nuclear weapons."
