The Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice, Haskell J. (Harmeet) Dhillon, stated on Thursday that the Justice Department will enforce the Supreme Court's ruling in all states with prohibitions against racial gerrymandering.
The day before, the Supreme Court ruled that Louisiana's two congressional district maps were unconstitutional, deeming the addition of another majority-Black district as racially biased gerrymandering.
Louisiana redrew its district maps in 2024 after a lower court ruled that its previous map likely violated the Voting Rights Act by not including a majority-Black district.
Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) urged the Department of Justice on Thursday morning to use its authority to implement the Supreme Court's decision nationwide.

Dhillon responded on X (formerly Twitter), "Senator, we are ON IT! The Department of Justice, under the leadership of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, is prioritizing equal protection under the law for all Americans in all areas, including employment, housing, and education – and that includes voting rights!"
This commitment is noteworthy as it signals the government's intervention amidst legal uncertainties surrounding the competition for control of the House of Representatives in November.
According to Just The News, there are 45 unresolved redistricting disputes currently in federal and state courts. Google AI Search indicates that as of April 30th, there are a total of 43 pending cases, with 34 in federal courts and 9 in state courts.
Of these, 35 lawsuits have been filed alleging racial gerrymandering or violations of the Voting Rights Act (VRA), suggesting that a significant number of districts may be affected by the Supreme Court's ruling.
In an interview with Just The News earlier this month, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel stated that the Republican party is "involved in 30 lawsuits in 32 states," indicating a proactive approach to counter Democratic movements.
In addition to Louisiana not having one seat flipped to Democratic control, Virginia is undergoing a Supreme Court review of a map that could add three seats for Democrats.
Texas is expected to see five seats swing in favor of Republicans, with the Supreme Court approving a map on April 27th.
Florida also saw Governor Ron DeSantis unveil a new map on April 27th that adds four seats for Republicans. The state legislature convened a special session to approve the map, drawing significant criticism from opponents.
Fox News projects that if states like Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina, which have been affected by the Voting Rights Act, make similar adjustments, up to 12 to 15 seats could shift in favor of Republicans.
