Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on the 6th (local time) that Iran is still reviewing the U.S. proposal to end the war, according to Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency.
In an interview with ISNA, Baghaei said, "Iran is still reviewing the U.S. plan and proposals, and after compiling Iran's position, we will convey it to the Pakistani side."
In relation to this, ISNA commented, "It is noteworthy that recent U.S. media outlets have been spreading speculation and fake news to create a favorable atmosphere for Trump and the U.S., thereby attempting to cover up the failure of the U.S. president's 'Project Freedom.'"
ISNA pointed out, "The U.S. media outlet Axios reported some details of an agreement the U.S. is reviewing with Iran, which included unreasonable and unrealistic proposals that our authorities recently strongly rejected."
Furthermore, ISNA stated, "Some of the Axios report's content is for media speculation and atmosphere creation, and we have received reliable information that what the Iranian negotiating team is discussing is the issue of 'ending the war,' and the nuclear issue is not a subject for negotiation at the current stage of talks."
This is noteworthy as it draws a line under speculation that the U.S. and Iran are close to reaching a war-ending agreement.
The Axios report mentioned by ISNA stated that the U.S. and Iran are close to signing a "one-page" Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that outlines a framework for ending the war and resolving the nuclear issue.
The MOU reportedly includes a temporary suspension (moratorium) of Iran's uranium enrichment, the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iran and partial release of frozen assets, gradual easing of restrictions on Iran's passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and gradual lifting of the U.S. maritime blockade of Iran.
The White House is reportedly awaiting a response from the Iranian side on key issues within 48 hours.
