CNN reported on the 6th (local time) that the background behind U.S. President Donald Trump's temporary suspension of the 'Project Freedom' initiative, aimed at assisting the movement of ships trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, was a message from mediator Pakistan that progress was being made in negotiations with Iran.
Two administration officials stated that the White House received positive feedback from the Pakistani side the previous day, indicating that Iran was showing progress towards a compromise with the United States.
They explained that this message from Pakistan served as the backdrop for President Trump's announcement of the suspension of Project Freedom on the same day, citing progress in negotiations.
President Trump stated on the social media platform Truth Social the previous day, "There has been great progress toward a complete and final agreement with the Iranian delegation. I will temporarily suspend Project Freedom to see if an agreement can be reached and signed," he said.
However, CNN reported that these administration officials maintained a cautious stance, noting that negotiations had failed at the last minute in the past.
According to reports from CNN and Axios, the U.S. and Iran are currently discussing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to end the war.
The one-page MOU, containing 14 articles, reportedly includes Iran's temporary suspension of uranium enrichment, the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Iran, and the gradual lifting of Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. maritime blockade on Iran.
It is understood that the plan being discussed is to first define the basic framework of negotiations through an MOU and then reach a final agreement through negotiations over the next 30 days.
In a PBS interview that day, President Trump stated that the proposed agreement would include the export of Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile to the U.S., the cessation of Iran's underground nuclear facility operations, and the easing of U.S. sanctions on Iran.
President Trump said, "I think there is a very high possibility of reaching an agreement," and suggested that an agreement with Iran could be reached before his planned visit to China next week (14th-15th).
However, he added, "But I have felt that way before when negotiating with them, so we will have to see what happens."
