U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday (local time) that Iran had agreed to several points, including abandoning its pursuit of nuclear weapons. This comes amid reports that a deal to end a dispute with Iran, which has lasted for more than two months, is imminent.
Speaking at a promotional event for UFC fights held in the Oval Office of the White House, President Trump said, "Look, it's very simple. Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. We don't want to see them have nuclear weapons, no matter who they are."
"We want to see you all live. Iran cannot and will not have nuclear weapons. And they have agreed to that, along with many other terms," he added.
Axios reported that the White House is awaiting Iran's response to a one-page memorandum aimed at ending the dispute and laying the groundwork for more detailed nuclear negotiations.
Reuters reported that Iran stated it was reviewing the U.S. peace proposal. Pakistani sources familiar with the mediation efforts, as well as another source, told Reuters that a one-page memorandum agreement to formally end the dispute was imminent.
President Trump said, "Now, the question is, if we were to withdraw from Iran right now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild. So, I guess that's good for us, right? We're in a good position. And we're doing well right now. Now we have to get what we have to get. If we don't, we'll have to take much bigger action."
"But having said that, they do want to make a deal. We've had very good conversations over the last 24 hours. And it's very likely that a deal will be made," he added.
According to Newsmax, President Trump stated as he left a White House event on Wednesday that the U.S. would secure highly enriched uranium, but federal officials indicated that Iran had not yet handed over more than 900 pounds (approximately 408 kg) of it.
Newsmax reported that Trump told a reporter as he left the event, "We're going to get it done."
