According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), at 9 a.m. EST on the 6th, U.S. forces operating in the Gulf of Oman opened fire on the Hasna, a supertanker of Iranian nationality, which was attempting to approach an Iranian port by breaching the U.S. blockade.
The tanker was reportedly empty.
In its report, CENTCOM stated that the military discovered the vessel in international waters heading towards a port in Oman and, after issuing multiple warnings for violating the blockade with no response, fired from a naval fighter jet towards the ship's rudder.
CENTCOM said, "U.S. forces disabled the Hasna's rudder with a 20mm cannon from an F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet launched from the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72)," adding, "The Hasna is no longer heading towards Iran."
This incident occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio announced that they had ceased attacks on Iran for the past 24 hours and were no longer guiding ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil transit route bordering Iran.
The Hasna, a 300,000-ton Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), was built in 2003 and was placed under sanctions by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in 2018, during President Donald Trump's first term, due to its association with the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC).
The tanker was added to the sanctions list as part of the largest sanctions imposed against Iran in a single day, approximately six months after President Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA).
This attack occurred about an hour after President Trump posted on Truth Social that Iran would end its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. military operation 'Epic Fury' "if they fulfill their agreements."
On April 19th, U.S. forces had previously opened fire on the engine room of the Iranian container ship Tosca, disabling it before boarding and seizing the vessel.
