President Donald Trump on the 7th (local time) claimed that Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic minority leader, should be charged with "inciting violence" in connection with an incident last month where an armed man attempted to storm the White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner and was arrested.

In a post on Truth Social, President Trump launched a strong condemnation, stating, "This lunatic, Hakeem Jeffries, who is ‘low IQ,’ should be charged with inciting violence!" and "Radical Left Democrats are actually trying to destroy our Country."

While President Trump did not directly comment on the attempted attack in his statement, his post juxtaposed a photo of Jeffries standing in front of a sign vowing "Maximum Warfare" against Trump's policies, with CCTV footage of the suspect, Cole Allen, who is accused of attempting to assassinate the president, quickly running into the venue with a rifle.

Axios reported that when Jeffries was questioned about the message after the attempted shooting incident last month, he defended the phrase "Maximum Warfare."

Jeffries stated, "I stand by my statement that I will wage maximum warfare everywhere, always, with respect to the Republican gerrymandering offensive that the Republicans have started. You can continue to criticize me. I don’t give a damn about your criticism… Get the hell out."

The remark sparked partisan conflict at the time.

In a post on X, Representative Andrew Clyde (Republican, Georgia) wrote, "Hakeem Jeffries called for 'Maximum Warfare' against President Trump and his administration. Last night, radical Democrats held up signs outside the WHCD that read ‘Death to the Tyrant’ and ‘Death to all of them.’ The rhetoric from Democrats is demonic and dangerous."

Representative Randy Fine (Republican, Florida) urged Democrats to "hold Jeffries accountable," posting on X, "It is unacceptable for House Democrats to remain silent after he called for 'maximum warfare everywhere, always' against Republicans."
