The Donald Trump administration has immediately appealed a ruling by the U.S. Court of International Trade (CIT) that put a halt to a "10% global tariff."
According to Reuters on the 8th (local time), the Trump administration filed an appeal against the CIT's ruling from the previous day.
The previous day, the CIT ruled 2-1 that the 10% tariff imposed by the Trump administration on all imports, based on Section 122 of the Trade Act, was illegal.
The court stated that Section 122 of the Trade Act was not designed as a legal basis to resolve the U.S. trade deficit, and ordered the suspension of the tariff's application to two small and medium-sized businesses and Washington State, which had filed the lawsuit.
Subsequently, President Trump reacted by telling reporters that the ruling was the fault of "two radical left judges."
Jamie Grier, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) representative, expressed confidence in winning the appeal.
Previously, after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the imposition of reciprocal tariffs based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was illegal, the Trump administration shifted its direction to a 10% universal tariff applying Section 122 of the Trade Act.
This tariff is scheduled to expire on July 24th if Congress does not approve its extension.
Reuters reported that this appeal has increased the likelihood of a prolonged legal battle over billions of dollars in tariff refunds.
