U.S. President Donald Trump [Photo courtesy of UPI Yonhap News]U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 10th (local time) that Iran's response to the U.S. proposal for a ceasefire was unacceptable.
President Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that day, "I just read the response from Iran's so-called 'representatives'," and "I don't like it. It's completely unacceptable."
Previously, the United States had sent a ceasefire proposal to Iran.
In relation to this, U.S. online media Axios reported on the 6th that both countries were close to signing a one-page ceasefire Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
President Trump had told reporters at the White House on the 8th, "I will probably receive a letter tonight," but Iran's state-run IRNA news agency reported on that day that Iran had conveyed its response to the U.S. through the mediating country, Pakistan.
President Trump did not specifically explain which parts of Iran's response were "unacceptable" in his Truth Social post that day.
However, given that President Trump has consistently cited Iran's "prohibition of nuclear weapons development programs" as his top priority objective, while also emphasizing the "opening of the Strait of Hormuz" as a prerequisite for a ceasefire, it is likely that he deemed Iran's reaction to these points as unacceptable.
According to U.S. media reports, the U.S. proposal reportedly centered on Iran suspending uranium enrichment, which is used for nuclear weapons material, for 20 years and ensuring the free passage of international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported on the 10th that Iran's proposal to the U.S. that day demanded a cessation of war on all fronts and the lifting of sanctions against Iran as key conditions for a ceasefire.
Tasnim News Agency further reported that Iran specifically emphasized the need to end the U.S. maritime blockade and lift the 30-day ban on Iranian crude oil sales.
In his post that day, President Trump did not state whether the ceasefire with Iran, ongoing since the 7th of last month, would be maintained or whether negotiations with Iran would continue.
Ultimately, following the high-level talks between the two countries in Islamabad, Pakistan, on the 11th-12th of last month, which concluded without a resolution, the indirect negotiations mediated by Pakistan have also failed.
Furthermore, with Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S.'s counter-blockade of Iran (counter-blockade of Hormuz) in opposition, the U.S.-Iran conflict appears to have reached another critical juncture as negotiations falter.
In a Truth Social post made approximately two hours before his reaction to Iran's response, President Trump had fiercely criticized Iran, stating, "Iran has been playing games with the United States and the rest of the world for 47 years. Delaying, delaying, delaying."
He specifically warned that Iran had "laughed at our Great, Great Country" and added, "They won't be laughing anymore."
In an interview with ABC News that day, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz stated that President Trump is "giving every possible opportunity to diplomacy before returning to hostilities," while simultaneously asserting that President Trump is certainly prepared to resume attacks on Iran.
