Photo of a nuclear submarine released by the U.S. Navy's 6th Fleet [Capture from U.S. Navy's 6th Fleet press release]
Amid President Donald Trump's scathing condemnation of Iran's revised peace proposal as "trash," the U.S. military has revealed the location of its top-secret nuclear submarines.
The U.S. Navy's 6th Fleet, responsible for Europe and Africa, announced in a press release on the 11th (local time) that an Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine had arrived in Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory off the southern coast of Spain, the previous day.
The 6th Fleet stated, "This port visit demonstrates U.S. capability, flexibility, and commitment to NATO allies," adding, "The Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine is an undetectable launch platform for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) and is the most survivable leg of the U.S. nuclear triad."
The fleet also released photos of the submarine.
The 6th Fleet did not disclose the name of the submarine. U.S. military publication Stars and Stripes reported that the USS Alaska, one of the 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, had arrived in the Strait of Gibraltar and that the USS Alaska is equipped with Trident missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
Typically, the locations of U.S. nuclear submarines are highly classified and are rarely disclosed, as they serve to demonstrate strategic deterrence.
The 6th Fleet's decision to issue a press release and disclose the submarine's location likely carries a message of pressure towards Iran. Nuclear submarines possess significant power due to their ability to move at high speeds covertly underwater and deliver surprise strikes.
The U.S. nuclear triad consists of SLBMs, ground-launched intercontinental ballistic missiles, and strategic bombers.
President Trump had previously stated his dissatisfaction with Iran's submitted revised peace proposal, declaring it unacceptable. On that day, he described Iran's proposal as "trash" and a "stupid offer," while also suggesting the possibility of resuming military operations to exert pressure.
