On the 11th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is "seriously considering" admitting Venezuela as the 51st U.S. state, citing its rich natural resources, and reiterated his claim that the Venezuelan people love him.
In a phone interview with John Roberts of Fox News, President Trump added, "Venezuela loves Trump."
The president had previously made a lighthearted remark about possibly running for the presidency of Venezuela and retiring there once his term in the White House ended. He pointed out that the ousting of former President Nicolás Maduro had helped boost his popularity in Venezuela.
In March, he said, "The relationship with Venezuela has been really good. In fact, I have the highest approval ratings in the polls. In other words, I might go to Venezuela after I finish my presidency... I could run against Delsy. That's an option."

Also in March, President Trump made a playful remark about Venezuela's potential statehood after the national team won a baseball game.
He wrote on Truth Social at the time, "Wow! Venezuela beats Italy tonight in the WBC (baseball!) semi-finals 4-2!" and "What a great performance. A lot of good things happening for Venezuela these days!"
He added, "I wonder what this magic is all about? STATEHOOD, #51, ANYONE?"
For now, even the phrase "seriously considering" seems to be an extension of a joke, but it can be interpreted as clearly indicating that the U.S. intends to assert control over the entire hemisphere.
The United States has sought to foster a spirit of liberal democracy in South America and has previously expressed ambitions to incorporate Greenland and Canada into U.S. territory.
