On the 13th (local time), the U.S. Senate rejected a War Powers Resolution that would have limited President Donald Trump's authority to continue the ongoing war with Iran. The resolution called for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. military forces from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In the vote, which failed 49-50, three Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Rand Paul of Kentucky—joined Democrats to vote yes. Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted no, siding with the Republicans.

This resolution is the latest in a series of failed attempts by the Senate to check the administration regarding the conflict that began in late February.

A total of seven resolutions with the same content have been put to a vote and rejected by the Senate to date.

The House of Representatives also voted on similar resolutions on March 5th (rejected 212-219) and April 16th (rejected 213-214).

The White House had previously informed Congress that due to the ongoing ceasefire, President Trump did not need congressional approval to continue the conflict.

President Trump has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the negotiation situation with the Iranian government, as the talks have so far failed to lead to a permanent agreement to end the conflict.

The White House has demanded that Iran commit to not pursuing nuclear weapons, a demand Tehran has not yet accepted. Conversely, Iran has requested reparations and the lifting of blockades and sanctions, demands that President Trump has refused, stating they are unacceptable.
