Alabama Governor Kay Ivey (Republican) announced on Tuesday the 12th that a special primary election would be held to select candidates to represent newly drawn House districts as part of a redistricting process following a Supreme Court ruling.

Most Southern states have undertaken redistricting efforts in response to the Supreme Court narrowing the scope of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act to eliminate race-based districts.

"I have called for special primary elections for House Districts 1, 2, 6, and 7," Ivey stated on X. "Alabamians know our state, our people, and our communities best."

She added, "The U.S. Supreme Court's decision is common sense and ensures our values are best represented in Congress."

The redistricting of Alabama's congressional maps is expected to result in one additional Republican-leaning House district.

The 7th Congressional District, traditionally a majority-Black district, is projected to retain its Democratic representation with U.S. Representative Terri Sewell. The district's racial makeup will remain largely the same.

However, the 2nd Congressional District, which had become more favorable to Democrats after the 2023 map changes incorporated a larger Black population, has been redrawn to favor Republicans.

Additionally, the 1st and 6th Congressional Districts have been redrawn to ensure incumbent Republican representatives can retain their seats.

The new special primary elections resulting from this adjustment are scheduled to take place in August. The general election will be held in November.
