Trump delivering a speech at a summit banquet [AFP Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump on the 14th (local time) positively assessed his summit meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and officially invited President Xi and his wife to visit the United States.
Speaking at a state banquet hosted by President Xi at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the same day, President Trump stated, "We have had a very positive and productive dialogue and meetings with the Chinese delegation."
He added, "Tonight is another valuable opportunity to discuss some of the matters we have discussed among friends," emphasizing, "All of these are good for both the United States and China."
In particular, President Trump said, "It is an honor to officially invite President Xi and Mrs. Peng Liyuan to visit the White House on September 24th."
President Trump noted that the United States has had a historically deep relationship with China since its founding and shared anecdotes from past U.S. presidents.
President Trump said, "Our founding father, Benjamin Franklin, published the teachings of Confucius in his newspaper. Today, a statue honoring that ancient Chinese sage is proudly engraved on the front of the U.S. Supreme Court building."
He also added, "Chinese people who respected our first president, George Washington, donated a plaque honoring his achievements to decorate the Washington Monument (in Washington D.C.)."
President Trump recalled, "Chinese laborers helped lay the railroad tracks that connected the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in America," and "Americans who visited China helped spread literacy and modern medicine."
President Trump explained, "At the request of the Chinese ambassador, President Theodore Roosevelt provided funding for the establishment of Tsinghua University, President Xi's alma mater."
He continued, "China was an ally in World War II," and "President Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke about the brave Chinese people." Although President Trump is known for his highly partisan nature, he drew attention by mentioning former President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a member of the then-opposition Democratic Party, in the context of bilateral friendship.
At the end of his banquet speech, President Trump proposed a toast, saying, "To the rich and enduring relationship between the American people and the Chinese people."
