Kevin Warsh. [Reuters Yonhap News File Photo]
Kevin Warsh, the next chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed), will take office this week.
Reuters reported on the 18th (local time), citing a White House official, that Warsh's inauguration ceremony will be held on the 22nd at the White House, presided over by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Warsh's confirmation passed the U.S. Senate on the 13th with 53 votes in favor and 45 against.
Warsh, who will begin his four-year term as Fed chair, will preside over the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, which decides the U.S. benchmark interest rate for the first time, on the 16th-17th of next month.
With President Trump constantly pressuring for interest rate cuts, the impact of Warsh's appointment on the Fed's monetary policy is drawing attention.
During his Senate confirmation hearing, Warsh emphasized the independence of the Fed and stated that he would decide monetary policy based on the Fed's own judgment rather than the President's demands.
Chairman Jerome Powell, who served as Fed chair for eight years and often clashed with President Trump, completed his term as chairman on the 15th. He will serve as interim chairman until Warsh takes office and will remain with the Fed as a governor afterward.
