Maryland is sending replacement ballots to all 500,000 voters who requested mail-in ballots after controversy arose over the state mailing some incorrect party ballots ahead of this week's primary election.

The Maryland State Board of Elections confirmed it acknowledged the error of distributing mail-in ballots to voters affiliated with the wrong parties in the upcoming primary election this week. However, the board denied allegations of fraud, CBS News reported.

The state said the error only affected voters who received ballots before May 14, but all mail-in voters will be sent a new ballot along with a postcard explaining the error and asking them to discard the original ballot and envelope.

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday, calling for the Department of Justice to investigate the election fraud incident.

"Maryland mailed out 500,000 illegal ballots and they got caught!" he claimed. "So now they are mailing out 500,000 more ballots, but nobody knows how the first 500,000 are being handled."

Trump claimed, "Moreover, a large number of these ballots were delivered to Democrats, so the Republican candidates running in Maryland have no chance of winning!" He added, "This was all done by the corrupt Governor Wes Moore. He allowed this to happen to ensure the Democrats win."

He continued, "I never understood why Maryland was considered a solid Democratic state, but now I know why," adding, "Clearly, this has been going on for years. I will be asking the Attorney General of the United States and the Department of Justice for an immediate investigation into this situation."

The Maryland General Assembly has been dominated by Democrats in both the House and Senate for 106 years, since 1920. This is the longest single-party congressional rule in the United States.

In presidential elections, Democratic candidates have won for 38 years since 1988. For federal Senate seats, Democrats have held both positions for 40 years since 1986. Out of a total of 8 federal House seats, Democrats hold 7, with Republicans holding only 1 (District 1, Andy Harris).

However, Republican candidates have occasionally won gubernatorial elections. Former Governor Larry Hogan (Republican) served for 8 years from 2015 to 2023. The current governor, Moore, is a Democrat.

In addition to winning the gubernatorial election in 2022, Maryland has held a "State Government Trifecta" (controlling the governorship, state Senate, and state House) for the past four years since securing a supermajority in the legislature.

According to the State Board of Elections, Maryland has 51.3% registered Democrats (approximately 2.2 million people), while registered Republicans make up 2.37% (approximately 1.02 million people), and independent voters account for 24.8% (approximately 1.07 million people).
