The U.S. Senate began passing a bill on the afternoon of Tuesday, the 19th, aimed at ending U.S. military intervention in Iran.

This occurred after Senator Bill Cassidy (Republican-Louisiana) broke with his party and joined the Democrats after losing in the primary election.

Although this vote was not a final passage but rather a procedural vote for Congress to officially begin related discussions and prepare for a final vote later, it garnered media attention as it showed a Republican incumbent openly opposing President Trump.

The bill requires the administration to obtain congressional approval if it continues or expands military operations targeting Iran, effectively aiming to nullify President Trump's war powers.

Despite Senator Cassidy changing his stance, Republican leadership appears to maintain its party position to block its passage. Most Republican senators point out that Congress has never halted ongoing national security operations by a president, regardless of party affiliation, in the past.

There is also a prevailing view that even if the resolution passes the Senate, it will be difficult to pass the House of Representatives.

The White House had previously stated that even if the bill passes both chambers, President Donald Trump is highly likely to veto it, as he has expressed his opposition to limiting the administration's authority over military actions related to Iran.

Overriding a veto would require more than a two-thirds majority in both the House and the Senate, which appears difficult to achieve at present given the partisan division over war powers.

However, the passage of the procedural vote in the Senate is raising concerns that Republican lawmakers' division under political pressure from President Trump could further jeopardize the already slim majority status of the party.
