Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard resigned abruptly on the 22nd (local time).

According to Fox News, Director Gabbard informed the White House during a meeting with President Donald Trump that she was resigning to care for her husband, Abraham, who is suffering from a "very rare form of bone cancer."

In her resignation letter, Director Gabbard stated, "Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026," citing, "My husband Abraham was recently diagnosed with a very rare form of bone cancer."

Gabbard stated in her resignation letter, "He will face significant challenges in the coming weeks and months. At this point, I must step down from public service to be by his side and support him as he navigates these challenges."

She added that her husband "has been my strong pillar of support for our 11 years of marriage," and that "he has been consistently by my side, whether I was deployed on a joint special operations mission in East Africa, throughout various political campaigns, and now as I serve in this position."

She also said, "His strength and love have given me the power to overcome every challenge," and "I cannot ask him to bear this fight alone while I continue to serve in such a demanding and time-consuming role."

Trump stated on Truth Social that Gabbard "did a great job" and that her resignation was due to her husband's bone cancer diagnosis.

President Trump said, "She will, of course, stay by her husband’s side and help him recover as they are currently fighting a tough battle together," adding, "I am confident that he will be healthier than ever soon."

He continued, "Tulsi has done a tremendous job, and we will miss her. Aaron Lukas, who is highly respected as the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, will serve as Acting Director of National Intelligence."

In her letter to Trump, Gabbard expressed her "deep gratitude for your trust in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the past year and a half."

She highlighted her achievements in her role, stating that she promoted "unprecedented transparency" and restored the credibility of the intelligence community.

According to Fox News, during her tenure as director, she led reforms including downsizing the agency, abolishing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, and saving taxpayers more than $700 million annually.

This month, she declassified over one million pages of documents related to the Trump-Russia scandal investigation and the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. She also established a task force to investigate attempts to weaponize the government during the Biden administration.

Gabbard stated in her resignation letter, "While we have made significant progress at the ODNI, including promoting unprecedented transparency and restoring integrity to the intelligence community, I am well aware that there are still important challenges that need to be addressed," and added, "I will do my utmost to ensure a smooth and thorough transition over the coming weeks so that you and your team experience no disruption in leadership or operational momentum."

The sudden resignation of the DNI, who oversees 18 intelligence agencies, is drawing attention as it creates a void in the intelligence command structure during a period of geopolitical instability.

Concerns are also being raised that the investigation into alleged fraud in the 2020 presidential election, which Director Gabbard had been leading, may become less transparent. These concerns stem from the circumstances that the investigation into election fraud has faced strong resistance from the "deep state" and has not gained momentum.
