US Secret Service and police investigating the shooting scene near the White House. On the 23rd (local time), Secret Service agents and police are investigating the scene of a shooting near the White House in Washington D.C. [AP=Yonhap News]
A man in his 20s, who was fatally shot by police at a checkpoint near the White House in Washington, U.S., had previously attempted to enter the White House multiple times.
According to U.S. media, including CNN, the shooter, identified as 21-year-old Nasir Best from Maryland, was killed by Secret Service (SS) agents the previous day. He had been apprehended multiple times around the White House in the past and had a history of involuntary psychiatric hospitalization.
Court records indicate that Best had been under Secret Service surveillance since last summer after loitering around the White House complex and inquiring about entry methods at various access points.
In June of last year, he was forcibly admitted to a psychiatric hospital for obstructing vehicle access to a section of the White House complex. In July of the same year, he was stopped by police after ignoring warning signs and entering a restricted area outside the White House.
At the time, he claimed to be "Jesus Christ" and stated that he "wanted to be arrested," according to the investigation.
Best's social media accounts reportedly contained posts that hinted at violence against U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as a post declaring, "I am truly the Son of God."
The SS stated on X (formerly Twitter) that "shortly after 6 PM (Eastern Time), an individual began firing a weapon from a bag at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue." The statement continued, "An SS police officer returned fire, striking the suspect, who was transported to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead."
One civilian was injured during the shooting incident.
President Trump, who was at the White House at the time, was unaffected by the incident, according to the SS.
