U.S. President Donald Trump delivers a speech at a Memorial Day ceremony. [AP=Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized on the 25th (local time) that "Iran will never have nuclear weapons."
Speaking at a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D.C., President Trump stated this in connection with the deaths of 13 U.S. service members during "Epic Fury," a large-scale military operation against Iran.
"These incredible men and women sacrificed their lives so that the world's leading state sponsor of terror can never have nuclear weapons," President Trump said.
"Banning Iran from nuclear weapons" has been a top priority condition set by President Trump during negotiations with Iran.
However, with the negotiations with Iran reaching a critical juncture and speculation rising that Iran's denuclearization might be deprioritized in favor of opening the Strait of Hormuz, this statement is noteworthy as it re-emphasizes the issue.
In his speech, President Trump mentioned veterans of past U.S. wars, saying, "Many of the greatest people have come through a long and epic journey, from World War II to the Korean War and the Vietnam War," and he also referred to a medical helicopter pilot who participated in the Korean War following World War II and served in the Vietnam War.
Prior to the ceremony, President Trump, along with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Defense (Secretary of War) Pete Hegses, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and paid tribute to the service members who sacrificed their lives for America.
