General JB Branson, Commander of the U.S. Forces Korea, recently stated on a podcast that from China's strategic perspective, South Korea would appear as a "dagger."

According to the U.S. Army War College website on March 26 (local time), General Branson appeared on a podcast hosted by the school on the 22nd and said, "When they (China) look from their eastern coast, what they see is South Korea, a dagger in the heart of Asia, and Japan, which is a kind of shield, a defensive wall when they have ambitions to move beyond the South China Sea."

The description of South Korea as a "dagger" implies its strategic value in deterring China from the U.S. perspective, while also reflecting the wariness China might feel about the presence of a U.S. ally (South Korea) and U.S. Forces Korea situated right on its doorstep.

Notably, China has consistently maintained that the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system deployed by the U.S. Forces Korea is a "dagger" used by the U.S. to militarily contain China.

General Branson's "dagger" remark could ultimately be interpreted in the context of suggesting the necessity of maintaining the ROK-U.S. alliance and U.S. Forces Korea as the commander of U.S. Forces Korea. However, it also appears to demonstrate his willingness to expand the role of the ROK-U.S. alliance and U.S. Forces Korea for "deterring China."

In other words, the remark could indicate that while the Trump administration emphasizes the ROK-U.S. alliance and U.S. Forces Korea, it is more focused on their utility in deterring China than in defending South Korea from North Korean threats.

General Branson has emphasized the role of the ROK-U.S. alliance in deterring China, connecting it to the "alliance modernization" that has become a key term for the ROK-U.S. alliance under the second Trump administration.

Last May, he described South Korea's geographical location as strategically important, stating, "It's like an island or a fixed aircraft carrier floating between Japan and mainland China."
