The court has rejected the request for an arrest review filed by Kim Se-ui, the head of the Garo Sero Research Institute, who is accused of defaming actor Kim Soo-hyun with false facts, seeking a judgment on the legality of his detention.
The Eighth-1 Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judges Cha Seung-hwan, Choi Hae-il, Choi Jin-sook) held a hearing on the arrest review for Mr. Kim, who was arrested on charges including defamation, threats, and attempted coercion, on the afternoon of the 2nd. The court dismissed the request, stating, "There are no grounds for the request."
Mr. Kim had filed for the arrest review on May 31st, five days after his arrest. This is a procedure for the court to re-examine the legality and necessity of the arrest investigation.
After about an hour of review on this day, Mr. Kim, with his hands bound with rope, emerged from the courtroom and argued that his detention was leading to defamation against the late Kim Sae-ron.
However, as Mr. Kim's detention status is maintained, the police, who have been investigating the case for about a year, are expected to conclude their investigation into the circumstances under which Mr. Kim pressured Kim Soo-hyun's side and transfer the case to the prosecution soon.
Mr. Kim is accused of spreading content through YouTube and other platforms, claiming that Kim Soo-hyun dated the underage late Kim Sae-ron and that Kim Sae-ron's death was due to pressure from Kim Soo-hyun's side to repay debts.
He is also accused of defaming Kim Soo-hyun by manipulating Kim Sae-ron's voice using artificial intelligence (AI) to fabricate statements such as, "I had sexual relations with Kim Soo-hyun for the first time during the winter break of my second year of middle school."
