U.S. President Donald Trump stated on the 2nd (local time) that recent reports claiming that dialogue regarding a peace treaty between the United States and Iran has been suspended are "fake news," and that the talks are ongoing.
In a post on his social media service, Truth Social, on the same day, President Trump wrote, "The fake news reports that Iran and the U.S. have stopped talking were false and wrong."
He continued, "Our talks have been continuing for four days ago, three days ago, two days ago, yesterday, and today," emphasizing, "Nobody knows how the talks will end, but as I told the Iranian side, it is time for you to reach an agreement in some way."
President Trump then added, seemingly alluding to Iran's hostile policies towards the U.S. and Israel, "You (Iran) have been doing this for 47 years, and we can't let you continue to do so any longer!"
On the 1st, Iran's Tasnim News reported that Iran's negotiating team with the U.S. had halted the exchange of messages for a peace treaty agreement with the U.S. in protest of Israel's attack on Lebanon. An Iranian official also told The Washington Post (WP) that the peace treaty negotiations with the U.S. had been suspended due to escalating Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
In response, President Trump claimed on the 1st that he had independently and indirectly communicated with both parties in the conflict (Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon) to reach an agreement to cease hostilities. He also stated that a memorandum of understanding (MOU) encompassing an extension of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz could be agreed upon within the next week.
