Federal agents arrested a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen on Wednesday who is accused of violating U.S. sanctions against Iran by supplying U.S.-made equipment to Iran's nuclear and military facilities.
The Justice Department said Jamshid Ghomi, 63, of Newport Coast, California, was charged with conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
According to court documents, Ghomi, the founder, owner, and CEO of Faraz Pardaz Rayaneh Co. Ltd., a computer networking company based in Tehran, is accused of using his company for over a decade to procure U.S.-made networking equipment for Iranian customers without the authorization of the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
He is also accused of reporting his maximum income to the IRS as $20,000, while his IT company generated more than $10 million in annual sales, according to the New York Post.
"Our laws prohibiting dealings with one of the world's leading state sponsors of terror must be enforced and obeyed," U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Damian Williams said in a statement. "We will hold him accountable by seeking an appropriate prison sentence and forfeiting his assets, including his $35 million Newport Beach mansion."
The department alleges that Ghomi knew his actions were illegal and took deliberate steps to conceal them, such as instructing co-conspirators to remove his name from shipping documents and omit invoices for shipments bound for Iran.
Ghomi was scheduled to appear for his initial appearance in federal court in Santa Ana, California, on Wednesday afternoon.
