Song Eon-seok, the floor leader of the People Power Party, resigned from his position on the 5th, with 10 days left in his term.
Amid growing calls within the party for Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk to resign due to responsibility for the June 3 local election defeat, the resignation of Song, one of the 'two leaders', is drawing attention for its ripple effects.
At a general meeting of lawmakers held at the National Assembly, Song expressed his resignation regarding the June 3 local elections, stating, "This election is a great victory for the wise people. I believe our party needs a new start to honor the will of the people."
He reflected, "The past year was by no means an easy time. I have worked with the words 'survival' and 'reconstruction' in my heart. It was about protecting the party amidst the fierce waves of sudden martial law, impeachment, and defeat in the presidential election, and about restoring checks and balances in Korean politics."
He continued, "I am very grateful to the people and party members for protecting the party until the end during difficult times. Thanks to you, we were able to survive and lay the minimum foundation to rise again in this local election, although there are regrets. However, due to my lack of ability, the task of party reconstruction has not yet been fully achieved."
He also spoke about negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties, saying, "Negotiations require both sides to apply fair standards, but the Democratic Party has never acted with normal standards, which has caused much frustration. How much mockery is contained in the words carelessly uttered by the floor leadership of the majority party, and I just endured it," he said, shedding tears and being unable to continue speaking for a while.
He concluded by saying, "Let's remember one thing. Let's definitely win the next general election."
