Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip [EPA Yonhap News file photo]
A senior official of Palestinian militant group Hamas stated they would refrain from the use of weapons in the Gaza Strip but have no intention of completely disarming, Al Jazeera reported on the 6th (local time).
Hamas political bureau member Hussam Badran said in an interview, "Once the Gaza National Committee for Administration (NCAG) takes control of the Gaza Strip, there will be no visible weapons on the streets and alleys of Gaza, except for the official weapons held by this committee, meaning the official Palestinian police."
Badran added, "Armed demonstrations, which were once common in Gaza, will also disappear."
However, he drew a line, stating, "This does not mean handing over weapons, but rather that weapons will not be visible, with the exception of official Palestinian police weapons," explaining that the specifics of this plan will be discussed going forward.
Following U.S. President Donald Trump's "peace initiative," Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire in October of last year, but Hamas has yet to fulfill the condition of disarmament, which Israel strongly demands.
The NCAG is an organization under the peace committee led by President Trump, tasked with the interim governance of the Gaza Strip. Since the beginning of the year, the NCAG has been preparing for the launch of a new police organization to replace the Hamas forces that have been governing Gaza.
Al Jazeera reported that eight major Palestinian factions, including Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP), are scheduled to meet in Cairo, Egypt, this weekend to coordinate their positions on the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
