U.S. Assistant Secretary of State visits Busan Saerom-ro Church [Provided by Saerom-ro Church]It has been confirmed that high-ranking U.S. State Department officials met with Reverend Son Hyun-bo of Saerom-ro Church, who led anti-impeachment rallies against former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
According to Saerom-ro Church on the 8th, a U.S. delegation including Riley Barnes, Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL), Julie Turner, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the DRL Bureau, and Belsis Romero, Liaison Officer for the White House Office of Faith and Opportunity Initiatives, visited Busan's Saerom-ro Church the previous day, met with Reverend Son and his team, and attended the Sunday service.
The church stated, "This visit was arranged after receiving contact from the U.S. State Department approximately four weeks ago, and extensive discussions were held on various current issues in Korea during the meeting."
Specifically, discussions covered the dissolution of religious corporations law, the comprehensive anti-discrimination bill, the accusation of "incitement to rebellion" against Reverend Son, regulations on Christian alternative education, and the Korea-U.S. youth solidarity program.
Reverend Son led the anti-impeachment rallies against former President Yoon as the head of "Save Korea," a Protestant organization. He was indicted on charges of illegal electioneering during the presidential election last year and received a six-month prison sentence suspended for one year earlier this year.
Reverend Son had previously met with Michael Needham, a State Department advisor, in February.
