University student councils across the country are holding simultaneous declarations of the current national situation to condemn the ballot shortage incident during the June 3 local elections and to demand the implementation of countermeasures.

The Emergency Response Committee of the Yonsei University Student Council released a press release on the 9th, stating that student councils from 12 universities nationwide will hold declarations of the national situation and host rallies on their respective campuses at 6:00 PM on the 10th, the anniversary of the June 10 Democratic Struggle.

The participating student councils include those from Yonsei University, Konkuk University, Korea University, Kyung Hee University, Sogang University, Seoul National University, University of Seoul, Sungkyunkwan University, Soongsil University, Chonnam National University, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and Hongik University.

They argued, "In 1987, college students and citizens took to the streets to win the democratic right of one person, one vote," adding, "It is a matter of grave concern that the right to suffrage, which was won with such difficulty, has been infringed upon by a state institution 38 years later."

They further emphasized, "Participating universities plan to clearly express the collective will of the university community through a unified message and convey the voice of the younger generation regarding the protection of democracy and suffrage."

In their declarations, they intend to demand: ▲ a thorough investigation and punishment of those responsible through state audits and special prosecutors, ▲ the establishment of measures to provide remedies for the infringement of fundamental rights by the state, ▲ structural reform of the National Election Commission, and ▲ the installation of a citizen-participatory reform oversight body.
