Dinosaur egg fossils, estimated to have lived approximately 100 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period, have been discovered in the Dadaepo Dusong Peninsula area of Busan.

According to comprehensive reporting on the 9th, Dr. Choi Seung of the Institute for Basic Science and Professor Emeritus Baek In-seong of Environmental Geological Science at Pukyong National University conducted a detailed structural analysis of several dinosaur egg fossils discovered in the Cretaceous sedimentary layers of the Dusong Peninsula in Dadaepo, Saha-gu, from 2021 to last year.

The analysis revealed that these dinosaur eggs belonged to large oviraptors, which were estimated to be 5-6 meters tall.

Oviraptors, known to have inhabited the Late Cretaceous period approximately 100 million years ago, are characterized by their bipedal locomotion, beak-like jaws, and feathers.

The dinosaur eggs analyzed by the research team were consistent with oviraptor fossil eggs found in Henan and Zhejiang provinces in China, as well as in Mongolia, and in Utah and Idaho in the United States.

Dr. Choi Seung stated, "This is the first time that research results on fossil eggs have been published supporting the fact that large oviraptor dinosaurs inhabited Busan," adding, "The Dadaepo sedimentary layers are a significant record showing the environment where large dinosaurs actually lived, and are particularly meaningful as they are the easternmost confirmed case in Asia."

This research was published last month in 'Papers in Palaeontology', an international academic journal published by the Palaeontological Association of Great Britain, established in 1957. (Yonhap News)
