U.S. President Donald Trump [Washington AFP=Yonhap News]
U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 11th (local time) that negotiations for a peace treaty with Iran have reached the final document coordination stage and a signing ceremony could be held in Europe this weekend.
At a proclamation signing ceremony at the White House on the same day, President Trump said, "We have just reached a great settlement regarding the war with Iran," adding, "Only the final document coordination stage remains."
He added, "It will be finalized in the coming days, and perhaps a signing ceremony will be held in Europe."
He confirmed the signing ceremony time as "probably this weekend," stating, "I will not be able to attend, but Vice President JD Vance will attend."
In this regard, he mentioned having spoken with the leaders of Iran's neighboring countries, including Israel, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait, and that he plans to speak with the President of Turkey as well.
President Trump also said, "The Strait of Hormuz will be opened as soon as the (peace treaty document) is signed."
President Trump emphasized, "Most importantly, we have reached an agreement that Iran will never possess nuclear weapons. This was the ultimate goal of what we had to go through to achieve this agreement. Therefore, this is a very big accomplishment."
He also claimed that Iran would not purchase or develop nuclear weapons in any way or form.
President Trump then said, "Let's see. It should be finished very well, and it should be finished very quickly. They (Iran) want it as much as everyone else does, and I think many good relationships can be made."
President Trump also introduced that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two countries, which is awaiting signing, will be very strong and detailed.
Earlier, President Trump had foreshadowed further stronger attacks against Iran on social media Truth Social on the morning of the 11th, following the 9th and 10th.
However, in a Truth Social post uploaded in the afternoon, he stated, "Based on the fact that discussions with Iran have reached the highest level of leadership and received approval, I, as the President of the United States, have canceled the airstrikes and bombings against Iran scheduled for this evening," suggesting significant progress in the peace negotiations with Iran.
President Trump's signing ceremony event in the Oval Office of the White House was initially planned to be held privately from the media, but it was switched to a public event shortly before.
This is interpreted as a sign that progress has been made in negotiations with Iran, and he intended to make public remarks regarding this.
When asked about how the current situation differs from past claims of impending agreements, President Trump replied that Iran, having suffered significant damage from U.S. military strikes, wants the agreement more than he does.
