President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on Friday, June 12, officially designating June 14 as Flag Day in accordance with a congressional resolution from 1949.

Flag Day is a holiday officially recognized to celebrate and display the American flag, also known as the "Star Spangled Banner." In proclaiming this day, President Trump referenced a resolution by the Second Continental Congress in 1777, which established the flag with its 13 red and white stripes and 13 stars on a blue background.

In his statement, President Trump announced, "Now, therefore, I, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2026, as Flag Day, and the week beginning June 14, 2026, as National Flag Week."

The President stated in the proclamation, "The Stars and Stripes have from the outset symbolized the fundamental spirit of America—freedom, justice, and belief in Almighty God," adding that "this banner is a physical representation of our enduring history, shared sacrifices, common heritage, and divine destiny."

He continued, "Last year, I sought to preserve the dignity of the flag by signing an Executive Order holding accountable those who desecrate our flag in connection with acts of violence and lawlessness," and "I also made it possible for foreigners who desecrate this flag, for which millions of proud Americans have fought and died, to be denied visas, residency, and citizenship. As President, I will use all the power of my office to defend the sacred honor of our flag and will forever strive to ensure that our proudest symbol of freedom receives all the respect it is so justly due."

President Trump said, "I direct the appropriate officials to display the flag on all Federal buildings during this week, and I call upon all Americans to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by displaying the flag," adding, "I also encourage all Americans to observe this period from Flag Day to Independence Day, as designated by Congress (89 Stat. 211), with all the reverence and solemnity due the occasion, by commemorating our heritage through public gatherings and activities, and by publicly reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States."

President Trump also mentioned the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, which will be celebrated on July 4.

The American flag has been altered numerous times as new states have been added, and it currently features 50 stars.
