"Save the Persecuted Christians (STPC)," a U.S.-based Christian non-profit grassroots organization, has launched a campaign to rescue former Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Morse Tan, who is currently unable to return to the U.S. due to an exit ban imposed by the South Korean government.

STPC is a U.S. non-profit dedicated to advocating for persecuted Christians worldwide. On Tuesday the 14th, the organization released a press statement via Christian Newswire announcing the campaign for Ambassador Tan’s rescue—a development expected to lead to coverage by numerous U.S. media outlets in the near future. 

In the press release, Dede Laugesen, Executive Director of STPC, stated, "I spoke with Ambassador Tan this morning to verify his situation," adding, "He expressed concern that his case is not receiving the attention it deserves in the U.S. and has asked for our help in exposing this 'lawfare,' which is similar to the tactics used by the Chinese Communist Party, to keep him hostage in South Korea." 

Laugesen added, "He is a long-time friend and a supporter of causes we hold dear."

Furthermore, STPC urged U.S. government officials to "demand the immediate lifting of the exit ban and the dismissal of charges that criminalize the free speech of an American citizen," asserting that "when an ally uses authoritarian tactics, the United States must stand up for its citizens and our shared values." 

This marks the first time a U.S.-based organization focused on Christian persecution has launched a rescue campaign for Ambassador Tan. Until now, advocacy for Ambassador Tan has been largely individual-driven and, despite being largely ignored by major media outlets, has circulated primarily through alternative platforms and the X (formerly Twitter) community, where calls for U.S. intervention have been spreading under the hashtag #FreeMorseTan. 

STPC pointed out that this case has resulted in a concerning "media silence," with extremely limited reporting from mainstream U.S. press, despite the involvement of high-ranking U.S. officials and a key American ally.

STPC stated, "We express our deep concern regarding former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Morse Tan, who is currently under an exit ban in South Korea for political reasons," and added, "As a U.S. citizen and long-time advocate for international religious freedom and human rights, Ambassador Tan has been unable to leave South Korea for over five weeks since his arrival in early June 2026."

The organization further explained, "Ambassador Tan, who served in the Trump administration and led the U.S. response to mass atrocities, including genocide and crimes against humanity, is currently under investigation for defamation. This relates to speech protected by freedom of the press regarding his remarks in Washington, D.C., about South Korean President Lee Jae-myung." 

According to Laugesen, Ambassador Tan stated, "The situation has escalated into a dangerous phase as the case has been transferred from the police to the prosecution. The prosecutors could now attempt to arrest or detain me at any time. This is a very dangerous escalation."

In a recent interview with Lindell TV, Ambassador Tan criticized the situation as "'lawfare,' the weaponization of legal means to suppress dissenting opinions." He emphasized protections under the U.S. Constitution, the First Amendment, and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), arguing that South Korean courts have no jurisdiction over statements made within the United States.

"This is not the rule of law," he said. "They are weaponizing the law to suppress me."

Attention is now focused on the potential impact of STPC’s campaign within the United States.
