A fire broke out at a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and transport facility at Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta following a drone attack, British maritime security firm Ambrey reported on the 29th (local time).

If the reports are accurate, it suggests that the Middle East conflict, which began in the Gulf region, may be spreading across the Red Sea to Egypt.

According to Reuters, AP, and AFP, fires were triggered by drone attacks on a U.S.-owned floating storage unit and a Greek-owned carrier. Ambrey reported that the crew members were evacuated and the fire has since been brought under control.

Port services provider Inchcape also stated in a separate message that fires had occurred on two gas carriers at the port of Damietta.

According to industry sources, a drone struck the floating storage unit 'Energos Winter,' causing a fire that subsequently spread to another vessel, the 'GasLog Salem.'

Other security sources also confirmed that the cause of the explosions was a drone attack.

Videos circulating on social media show smoke billowing from tankers docked at the LNG production facility, with firefighting vessels spraying water onto the burning ships.

According to British maritime risk management firm Vanguard, the Energos Winter was struck on its starboard side by an unidentified projectile.

No group or entity has yet claimed responsibility for the incident.

The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources issued a statement confirming that a fire had broken out on a regasification vessel and a storage vessel at the port of Damietta and that it was being extinguished, adding that no casualties had been reported.

However, the Ministry did not specify the cause of the fire.

The ministry also noted that Minister of Petroleum Karim Badawi traveled to the site immediately after being notified of the fire to personally oversee the suppression and safety efforts, urging the media and social media users to verify accurate information only through official government statements.
