President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would release new guidance to provide "total protection" for prayer in public schools.
Speaking at a meeting of the Department of Justice's Religious Liberty Task Force at the Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C. earlier that morning, President Trump said, "The Department of Education will soon be releasing new guidance protecting the right of prayer in public schools, and this is total protection."
He did not elaborate on the new guidance but stated, "For most of our nation's history, the Bible was in every classroom across the country. Today, in many schools, students are being indoctrinated with anti-religious propaganda, and some are being punished for their religious beliefs. Very, very severely punished. It's unbelievable."
President Trump remarked, "America was built on faith. When faith is weak, our country seems to be weak. But when faith is strong, as it is now, after a tough period, we're having a very good period. Good things are happening in our country. It's truly amazing how faith works."
In a statement, Education Department spokesperson Savannah Newhouse said, "The Department is pleased to support President Trump's vision of promoting religious freedom in schools nationwide."
A Pew Research poll conducted from July 2023 to March 2024 among 37,000 adults showed a slight increase in support for prayer that mentions God, regardless of specific religion, reaching 57%.
In June, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill mandating the recitation of the Bible in classrooms and the posting of the Ten Commandments.
During his speech, President Trump emphasized, "We will never give up the rights that God has given us. We will defend our freedom, our values, and our sovereignty. And we will defend our freedom."
He also mentioned that the World Cup and the Olympics would be held in the United States in 2026, coinciding with the nation's 250th anniversary. He recalled securing the bid for the World Cup during his first term, saying, "Everything was great, except the only problem was that I wouldn't be president when the World Cup took place. And there were bad people. There was a 'rigged election' in 2020. But look at what has happened. I was able to make the World Cup and the Olympics happen. Isn't it amazing how God works?"
Meanwhile, President Trump announced that he would be donating his family Bible to the Museum of the Bible that day. Trump used this Bible for both of his inaugurations.
