Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is coordinating a brief meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York on the 23rd (local time), Kyodo News reported on the 22nd.


According to the report, Prime Minister Ishiba is pursuing an opportunity to speak with President Trump at a reception hosted by the President and his wife.


Kyodo reported that Prime Minister Ishiba is expected to confirm the need for both Japan and the U.S. to work towards strengthening their alliance, even after his term ends. He will step down after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party selects a new leader on the 4th of next month, and a new prime minister is elected in the Diet.


Prime Minister Ishiba is also coordinating meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.


He is set to depart for New York on the 23rd to attend the UN General Assembly and will return on the 25th.


In his address at the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Ishiba plans to state that Japan has strived for world peace thanks to the spirit of tolerance shown by Asian countries after the war.
