Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.) said Monday that the House should investigate organizations that label mainstream conservative groups as "hate groups," stating in an interview with Newsmax that some of these groups have incited political violence and should be subject to congressional oversight.

Appearing on Newsmax's "National Report," Harris explained a letter sent by the House Freedom Caucus to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

The letter calls for a full investigation into groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which frequently labels conservative or faith-based organizations as extremist.

Under the Biden administration, law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, have used reports from left-wing groups like the SPLC to label organizations as hate groups and exert pressure through investigations.

"Yes, absolutely. We need to investigate," Harris said. "This has been going on for years, and of course, it was exacerbated by the outright violence during COVID-19 and the George Floyd riots. We know where the money has been flowing to those groups."

Harris argued for a deeper dive into the funding networks and politicians involved, citing Vice President Kamala Harris's support for a bail fund for protesters in 2020.

"Ultimately, there is a money trail, and we need to follow that money because it is being used by the political left to incite violence," he stated.

Harris also pointed to left-leaning financier George Soros.

"We all know that George Soros is behind these," he said, mentioning Soros's support for the election of progressive prosecutors and attorneys general.

"This has to stop right now. The bottom line is that it should never be tolerated. Obviously, protesting in America is a First Amendment right. But it should not devolve into violence. And there should not be an organized way to incite violence as there is right now," he added.

The House Freedom Caucus urged Speaker Johnson earlier this month to give committees full subpoena power to obtain "records and communications between violent protesters and the groups sponsoring them," he said.

The Open Society Foundations, founded by Soros, has vehemently denied allegations of supporting violence. In a statement last month, the organization said it "does not support or fund violent protests." The foundation claims its funding is focused on advancing democracy, human rights, and justice.

Harris emphasized that Congress has a duty to ensure the constitutional right to peaceful protest is not being exploited.

"There should never be an organized means to incite violence," he stressed, arguing that subpoena power would allow lawmakers to "follow the money" and "block" organized attempts to incite unrest.
