Google (Google) promised on Tuesday (23rd) to grant the right to restore YouTube accounts permanently banned for political remarks. Google admitted that it was pressured by the government during the Joe Biden administration to remove COVID-19 related content.

This policy shift represents a victory for former President Donald Trump's conservative supporters, who have long accused tech platforms and professional fact-checkers of having a progressive bias and censoring the political right under the guise of misinformation prevention policies.

In a five-page letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (Republican), the legal counsel for Alphabet, YouTube's parent company, stated, "Reflecting the company's commitment to freedom of expression, YouTube will offer all creators whose channels are no longer valid due to repeated violations of its COVID-19 and election integrity policies the opportunity to rejoin the platform."

The letter read, "YouTube values conservative voices on its platform and recognizes that these creators have a wide reach and play an important role in civic discourse."

It is not yet clear how the policy shift will be applied or which creators will return and when.

In recent years, figures such as former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, former White House Director of Counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka, and former White House Policy Advisor Steve Bannon have been banned from YouTube. News & Post also had its channel, 'Sung Ku Hong's News Briefing,' removed for violating community guidelines with content related to COVID-19 and election fraud.

Notably, the letter contained details about how Biden administration officials pressured Google to remove COVID-19 related misinformation. Google's lawyers also stated that Google had censored content according to its internal policies separately from the Biden administration, but has since withdrawn those policies.

The legal counsel for Alphabet wrote, "Senior officials in the Biden administration, including White House officials, repeatedly and persistently contacted Alphabet and pressured the company regarding specific user-generated content related to the COVID-19 pandemic that did not violate Alphabet's policies."

The legal counsel added, "The administration created a political climate to influence the platform's actions based on concerns about misinformation."

After Biden took office in 2021, his administration urged platforms to remove harmful misinformation.

Chairman Jordan, who has spent years investigating incidents that Republicans claim were part of a systematic effort by the Biden administration to suppress conservative voices online, welcomed Alphabet's announcement as a "victory in the fight against censorship" and an "enormous win" for the American people.

Jordan added on X (formerly Twitter), "In compensation to the American people and to honor our hard work, YouTube is withdrawing its censorship policies on political speech, including topics like COVID-19 and elections. We no longer need to be told what to believe and what not to believe by Americans."

Alphabet emphasized, "YouTube has not and will not authorize fact-checkers to take action on or label content across its services."

Instead, it has adopted a "community-driven approach to combating online misinformation," a method popularized by Elon Musk's platform, X. This allows users to add notes with context to content.

The decision to reinstate previously banned users also aligns with Musk's move to re-admit celebrities on X who were once called out for spreading misinformation. He rebranded Twitter to X after acquiring it in 2022.

Earlier, Meta, Facebook's parent company, implemented a similar policy shift last year.

At the time, Meta announced the abolition of its third-party fact-checking system, which then-President Joe Biden criticized as "truly shameful."

In parallel with congressional investigations, two Republican state attorneys general filed lawsuits over social media censorship. Although these lawsuits won in lower courts, they were ultimately dismissed by the Supreme Court, which ruled that the plaintiffs lacked standing to sue.

The Supreme Court's ruling disappointed Republican lawmakers who had hoped for a landmark decision that social media companies' censorship practices violated the First Amendment.

Meanwhile, Google criticized the European Union's Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act in its letter. The company told the House Judiciary Committee that it would "remain vigilant" even when facing legal obligations in other countries.

EU laws have received bipartisan review in Congress due to concerns that foreign laws might compel large IT companies to comply with broader regulations and enhance content moderation in ways that could affect American users. Google agreed that EU laws "impose an excessive regulatory burden on American companies."
