The political landscape has entered a new phase of tension as the Lee Jae-myung administration officially launches its impeachment scenario targeting Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae. 

The spread of false rumors about a summit and efforts to summon him for a hearing are reminiscent of the impeachment proceedings against former President Yoon Suk-yeol. While the current process is cloaked in legality, criticism is mounting that it is essentially a political hunt for power.

The Presidential Office's repeated signals of "cautiously, slowly" are not merely about pacing. They are interpreted as a strategic move to systematically build a case for impeachment. 

Although an impeachment motion can pass with a majority in the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court requires public consensus and valid grounds for a dismissal ruling. Therefore, politicians are preoccupied with "creating pretexts," inflating various suspicions, and concurrently waging a war of public opinion.

Amidst this, remarks by Jeong Cheong-rae, the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, have become a spark igniting the political turmoil. He stated on Facebook, "If we can impeach a president, why not a chief justice?" and "Our people chased out Syngman Rhee, fought against Park Chung-hee's Yushin dictatorship, and impeached Yoon Suk-yeol."

These statements, which seem to mock the separation of powers, are being criticized as not just expressions of political will but as egregious remarks. Not only the ruling party but also the centrist camp have criticized them as "remarks that make a mockery of democratic institutions," and the media has pointed out Jeong Cheong-rae's self-inflicted gaffe, calling it "political abuse rather than political rhetoric."

While it may help solidify the support base, it is predicted to eventually boomerang back to the speaker. Like the harsh paradox of politics, "when the hunt is over, the hunting dog is also eaten," there is a high possibility that Jeong Cheong-rae himself could become a scapegoat after the impeachment of Chief Justice Cho.

This trend is intertwined with the reorganization of the power structure. 

The Lee Jae-myung administration, having gained control of financial resources and organizations through the establishment of the Ministry of Planning and Budget, is now attempting to reorganize even the separation of powers by targeting the head of the judiciary. Warnings are being raised both inside and outside political circles that "if the Chief Justice falls, the presidential system, which encompasses all three branches of government, will be completed." 

Jeong Cheong-rae may be positioning himself as a vanguard, but the scenario of vanguards ultimately being discarded as political expendables is not an unfamiliar sight in Korean political history.

Adding to this, the North Korean variable further heightens uncertainty. 

The foundation of the administration could be shaken if North Korean Chairman Kim Jong Un makes even a single remark regarding the alleged illicit cash remittances to North Korea. These remittances remain an Achilles' heel for the Lee Jae-myung administration, and an atmosphere of extreme caution is palpable within the government.

This is also why U.S. President Donald Trump has a reason to pursue another summit with Kim Jong Un. In addition to the traditional task of deterring North Korea's nuclear program, the truth behind the cash remittances is becoming a new diplomatic leverage for Trump.

The political outlook has become even darker. 

Although Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae emphasized the importance of judicial independence at the ceremony for appointing new judges on the 25th, it remains to be seen whether this can halt the Lee Jae-myung administration's unchecked advance.

However, if the attempt to impeach the Chief Justice materializes, judicial independence will suffer a fatal blow, and power will converge towards a more centralized structure. While Jeong Cheong-rae's words and actions may currently sound like signals of power, they could later serve as a warning that foreshadows his own political fate. 

And Kim Jong Un's pronouncements and Trump's summit will act as "external variables" amplifying uncertainty by intertwining with domestic politics. 

The arena of impeachment has always consumed unexpected victims, and it is highly likely that this irony will be repeated. Ultimately, there is only one lesson to be learned. 

Power always devours itself, and the boomerang invariably returns.
