Former FBI Director Christopher Wray. AFP=Yonhap News.
U.S. President Donald Trump is targeting another former FBI chief, following his pursuit of former FBI Director James Comey.
In an interview with NBC News on the 28th (local time), President Trump stated regarding former Director Christopher Wray, who led the FBI during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, that "the Department of Justice is likely investigating him."
President Trump is raising suspicions that the FBI covertly embedded agents within the crowd gathered at the Capitol at the time, alleging that they played a role in inciting the crowd.
In the NBC interview, regarding former Director Wray, President Trump said, "What he did was very inappropriate," adding, "We just found out that all those FBI agents were there."
When asked if the Department of Justice is investigating former Director Wray, President Trump replied, "I think they probably are."
The January 6 Capitol riot refers to the incident where supporters of Trump, refusing to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election, stormed the U.S. Capitol.
On the 27th, President Trump stated on his social media platform, Truth Social, "It just came out that the FBI, violating all rules, regulations, procedures, and standards, had 274 FBI agents in the crowd just before and during the January 6 Hoax," and added, "The FBI agents were likely acting as provocateurs and insurgents, and certainly not as 'law enforcement officers.'"
This appears to refer to a report by the conservative media outlet 'Blaze Media,' which cited congressional sources claiming that "the FBI had 274 plainclothes agents embedded in the crowd on January 6."
The New York Times (NYT) reported that day, "President Trump has been trying to rewrite the history of the January 6 Capitol riot by demanding investigations into those who investigated him and his supporters for years, and by pardoning everyone involved, including those who served prison time for brutally attacking police officers (during the Capitol breach)."
The NYT further noted that claims suggesting the FBI covertly deployed undercover agents to incite the riot are "false," citing findings from the Department of Justice Inspector General that there is no evidence of undercover agents being present during the riot.

This is not the first time President Trump has targeted a former FBI director.
Former FBI Director James Comey, who was recently indicted, is a figure who had a long-standing conflict with Trump after leading the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, which Trump alleged was intended to ensure his defeat.
Previously, federal prosecutors, under instructions from President Trump, reversed an initial decision not to prosecute and indicted former Director Comey on the 25th on charges of making false statements to Congress and obstruction of congressional proceedings.
On the 26th, President Trump harshly criticized former Director Comey on Truth Social, calling him a "Dirty Cop."
Former Director Wray, Comey's successor, voluntarily resigned in January around the launch of Trump's second term, despite having time left in his tenure, after President Trump announced that he had nominated his close associate, current FBI Director Kash Patel, as his successor following his election victory last year.
Wray was also widely considered to have fallen out of favor with President Trump during his tenure due to the FBI's raid on Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida estate, in connection with the investigation into the mishandling of classified documents after Trump's first term in office.
